This allows individuals to continually ‘up skill’ or ‘re-skill’ regardless of age or educational level.

2026 CPD Course – Overview, Aims, Objectives & Session Outline

Course Overview

The 2026 CPD Course provides evidence-based continuing professional development for registered farriers and hoof care professionals. The programme integrates functional anatomy, biomechanics, diagnostic imaging, applied farriery skills, regulatory compliance, and whole-horse perspectives.

Overall Course Aims

• Enhance understanding of functional anatomy and biomechanics

• Support evidence-informed trimming and shoeing

• Improve interpretation of diagnostic imaging

• Promote ethical and compliant professional practice

• Encourage a multidisciplinary whole-horse approach

• Critically evaluate traditional and contemporary hoof care models

Learning Objectives

By completion, participants will be able to:

1. Describe functional anatomy relevant to locomotion

2. Explain equine biomechanical principles

3. Assess hoof balance and mapping systems

4. Interpret common diagnostic images

5. Apply foundational shoemaking principles

6. Demonstrate regulatory compliance awareness

7. Recognise whole-horse influences on hoof form

8. Understand heel elevation and venograms in laminitis

9. Evaluate natural and therapeutic hoof models

Session 1 – Functional Anatomy

Introduction to muscle function, lever systems, and anatomical mechanics relevant to farriery.

Session 2 – Biomechanics of Movement

Exploration of static and dynamic biomechanics and force distribution through the limb.

Session 3 – Normal or Common?

Critical review of hoof mapping systems and field measurement of palmar/plantar angles.

Session 4 – Diagnostic Imaging Masterclass

Introduction to radiographic principles, exposures, and common foot images.

Session 5 – Shoemaking to Fit

Reading the foot, material calculation, and allowance for hoof distortion.

Session 6 – FRC Compliance and Code of Conduct

Professional responsibilities, complaint prevention, and record keeping.

Session 7 – The Whole Horse Connection

Influence of musculoskeletal, myofascial, and neurological systems on hoof balance.

Session 8 – Heel Elevation and Venograms

Use of heel elevation and venography in laminitic cases.

Session 9 – Hoof Models and Therapeutic Concepts

Evaluation of the natural hoof model and banana shoe applications.
